Dexter Village Accepting Applications for 2013 Community Garden Plots

You can grow your own organic food and enjoy the company of other gardeners - right here in Dexter!

The Village of Dexter Community Garden has been growing for 3 years. When you garden at the Community Garden, you will meet people you may not have otherwise met.  You may also pick up lots of gardening know-how from your gardening neighbors, and maybe even some recipes for your freshly-harvested produce. You could choose to give some of your harvested bounty to the local food pantry, to help those in need, or as a gift to your neighbors and coworkers.

Here at Dexter Community Garden we try to make it easy for everyone to garden with us. Because it was once a sheep pasture, the soil in our garden is very fertile. We plow in the spring before the garden opens to get the soil ready.  We do not have a set watering schedule or water quotas, so water any time of day! We offer tools for our gardeners to use, we supply straw for mulch, and of course a community of gardeners is here to answer all your questions!

Would you love to garden but you have trouble kneeling and bending? In addition to our 16 garden plots, we have 4 raised beds available which are designed for those whose mobility may be limited. These beds are either 3’ or 4’ high.

Looking for an activity for you and your children or grandchildren to enjoy together? Gardening is a wonderful way to spend a few hours outdoors. Let your children experience the delight of planting, growing and harvesting their own food!

To apply for a plot in the garden, go to the Village of Dexter website http://dextermi.gov/community-garden where the 2013 application can be downloaded. Then, send it off to the village office. It’s that easy! The guidelines for the garden, which include information on the size and cost of plots, may also be found on the website.

Follow your Village of Dexter Community Garden on Facebook for inspiration, commiseration, and general news and information.

So, don’t be a couch potato this year. Put on your gloves, grab a hat and head to Dexter Community Garden for a summer-long dose of happiness, good health, and delicious veggies!

Please consider joining us for a preseason meeting on March,21 at 6:30 pm at the Dexter Library.
