Zingerman's Roadhouse Chef Helps Dexter Students Raise Funds for School Garden

A soup fundraiser will be held at Creekside Intermediate School on Nov. 3.

Soup lovers, pack up your bowls and head over to in Dexter on Nov. 3 for the Late Fall Soup Dinner, a fundraiser to benefit the Creekside garden and kitchen classroom programs.

The menu of soups from around the world will be created by Alex Young, chef and owner of Zingerman’s Roadhouse in Ann Arbor. All of the soups will be made with help from the students at Creekside.

Creekside’s kitchen classroom program comprises seven kitchens and a garden, in which students learn about growing and preparing their own food. The program is loosely based on the Edible Schoolyard program that art teacher Jane Mentero learned about in California in 2010.

According to Montero, the students are very interested and excited about the program.

“Kids are cooking and learning about gardening,” Montero said. “Last year's soup dinner helped raise money to put in eight raised (garden) beds."

Montero said the soup dinner is a popular event at the school.

“We sold out last year, with more than 200 people attending. It was a huge success," she said.

The all-you-can-eat menu of offerings coincides with sixth-grade social studies lessons and includes soups from ancient civilizations including lablabi, a Tunisian chickpea soup from Mesopotamia; an Egyptian soup; and mulligatawny from India.

“The smell in the school the day of the soup dinner is wonderful,” Montero said.

Tickets for the fundraiser cost $10 for adults and $8 for children 6-12; children 5 and younger eat free. Tickets may be purchased online at dexterschools.org.  For more information about the supper, visit creeksidegarden.weebly.com.
