Dexter United Methodist Church Plans 4th Annual Super Bowl Breakfast
Michigan and Michigan State University baseball coaches will headline this year's event.
College sports fans will get a rare opportunity to exchange stories with rivals from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University's baseball teams in Dexter on Feb. 4. Coaches and team members will headline the Dexter United Methodist Church’s fourth annual Super Bowl Breakfast.
The free event is presented by both the church and the nonprofit group, Athletes in Action. Aptly titled "Rivals Unite," the event will feature several guest speakers including MSU baseball coach Jake Boss, Jr. and U-M baseball coach Rich Maloney.
Event organizer and DUMC member Jerry Mader said he is looking forward to the breakfast.
“We (DUMC) have a lot of Michigan State people here," said Mader, who played for U-M in the 1965 Rose Bowl.
Maloney and Boss will share their inspiring stories about their lives and their Christian faith in an interview-type talk conducted by Athletes in Action’s Bruce Dishnow.
Athletes in Action is a worldwide Christian organization that, according to its web site “utilizes the platform of sport to share the love of Jesus around the world. The group is a spiritual resource for college athletes that provides them with Bible study and community service project opportunities on college campuses across the United States.
“This breakfast is an opportunity for our athletes and coaches to give back to our community through providing inspirational and positive role models,” Dishnow said. “We hope our ‘Rivals Unite’ theme this year will inspire respect for one another in our homes, schools and state.”
According to Mader, who has been involved in all of the church's Super Bowl breakfasts, more than 400 people attended last year.
“We’re hoping to get more people this year," Mader said.
The menu includes steak, scrambled eggs, pancakes and sausage. Though the event is free, there will be a free-will offering to benefit this year’s Athletes in Action's spring break mission trip to Los Angeles.
