Webster Township Unveils Long-Term Land Use Study

The township's open space preservation study calls for more protection of rural land in the community.

A new report released by Webster Township this week will serve as a guide for local leaders in the future development of commercial and residential property in the township.

The Build Out Analysis Report was commissioned by the Planning Commission and conducted by Sarah Mills, a doctoral student at the University of Michigan School of Urban and Regional Planning.

"This study shows us the level of residential building that could ultimately be possible when the township were to be fully developed," Rob Mitzel, chairman of the Webster Township Planning Commission said.

Mitzel said the report is an informational tool to help the Planning Commission understand the potential long-term consequences of the township's current zoning ordinance — particularly on natural resources, road infrastructure, and schools.

The study included interviews with 17 township officials and residents, and includes an analysis on the township's 2010 master plan and five alternate zoning scenarios to explore the impacts of a change in current policy.

A presentation on the report's findings will take place Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Webster Township Hall, 5665 Webster-Church Road. The public is invited to attend.
