Being Organized

In 2005 I voluntarily left a corporate career in the auto industry to found Simply Organized Life. The last six years as a professional organizer, or organizing consultant, have been highly fulfilling. It has been wonderful to help clients, seminar attendees and readers on what I like to call our "organizing journey."

Despite what you read in the mainstream press and see on television, getting and being organized is a process, not an event. Owning "stuff" and having clutter is a part of living, even for professional organizers.

Getting and being organized is a lot like pulling the layers of an onion back. It takes a little bit of work and there is always another layer to tackle, but the reward of an organized space is amazing.

Through this blog and my other writings (my monthly newsletter Your Simply Organized Life, the Simply Organized Life blog and Facebook quick tips) I will share tricks from a professional to make your organizing journey a little easier.

Hi Carolyn. I'm very interested in the psychological effects of becoming organized. What is the impact on executive functioning/cognitive planning, affect, e.g., depression/anxiety, etc. Would you be interested in blogging on those topics in the future?

Hello Marty:

Thank you for your comment. From your profile, you are probably much more qualified to discuss this topic than myself. Most of my findings are anecdotal; however, I have read of research in this area (including at UM) on The Happiness Project http://www.happiness-project.com and the Unclutterer blogs http://unclutterer.com. The scientific findings are what I know to be true from working with clients....becoming organized helps in these areas.

Please feel free to contact me personally if you would like to discuss further or contribute to my writings.

Carolyn
