Library Links is a weekly column series focusing on news and events at the Dexter District Library written by members of the library staff.
The Friends of the Dexter District Library will host a used book sale today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the library's lower level. Prices range from 25 cents to $2. There is also a selection of various priced Valentine gift books and video cassette tapes available. All proceeds benefit the library.
By Cathy Jurich On Aug. 13, the Dexter District Library wrapped up another successful summer reading program, attracting a record number of families to the library. This summer almost 1,300 Dexter area children and teens participated in the programs “Dream Big Read” and “Own the Night” which encouraged everyone to continue reading throughout the summer. When the program began in June, children ages 12 and under set a goal for the number of books or amount of time they would read during the summer while teenagers were asked to read three hours per week for seven weeks. Summer is one of the busiest times around the library, and everyone is invited to join our summer reading programs. Read for fun all summer and enter our grand prize drawing for some amazing prizes. Spring Storytimes for toddlers and preschoolers will begin at the Dexter District Library on March 26 and run through May 17. Parents or caregivers of children may register in person at the library or by calling 426-4477. Space is limited, so registration will be on a first come first served basis. Registration began on Monday. Parents are encouraged to register their child early as sessions fill up quickly. The Wildlife Safari Company of Canton will present a one-hour AustralianOutback Adventure for children of all ages at the Dexter District Library on Friday. Join Nelson “The Animal Guy” for an interactive, educational program introducing live Australian animals at 11 a.m. Wildlife Safari has been providing safe and entertaining natural science programs for school children for 20 years. The Dexter District Library will host a reception and meet and greet with local artists whose quilts are currently on display at the library. The reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday. The public is invited to come and meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments. Artists attending the reception include Jill Ault, Mary Bajcz, Kathleen Campau, Mary Gentry, Sue Holdaway-Heys and Gretchen Jackson. Pieces from the show will be available for purchase. The Dexter District Library is offering a lineup of fun winter events for children of all ages through December. Come in from the cold and enjoy all the warm programs the library will offer this winter. On Dec. 17, celebrate the holidays with three special programs. A drop-in story and craft for kids will be held at 11 a.m. on the lower level. The month of April will be a busy time at Dexter District Library, which has an assortment of programs planned for the entire family. From 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, the Friends of the Dexter District Library will host its monthly used book sale. Since the holidays, the Dexter District Library has seen an increase in the number of people interested in accessing electronic books with e-reader devices.  The Dexter District Library currently has more than 250 patrons who regularly use its download destination service to checkout, download and read e-books on their electronic devices.  The library provides approximately 1,000 e-book titles, but there are some considerations when choosing an e-reader device if you want to use the library's service.
