Dexter Township May Add Public Safety Millage to November Ballot to Fund Permanent Fire Station

The Dexter Township Board directed its Public Safety Advisory Committee to draft a proposal to bring to the board for its June 19 meeting.

Dexter Township residents may be asked to vote for a public safety millage to help fund a permanent fire station and an outdoor tornado warning system in the township during the general election in November. The township board directed Dominic Tregalia, chairman of the Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC), to draft a proposal outlining how much it would cost to fund a permanent fire station in the township during its meeting on Tuesday. "I think a permanent substation is in the best interest of this community," Tregalia said. "The run data shows that having the temporary substation has been effective and the response time has greatly been reduced. I know that I'm thankful if I have an emergency, someone will respond right away." In 2010…

Michigan Representatives Want iPads, Handheld Devices Added to Internet Crime Safety Law

State Rep. Mark Ouimet says cell phones and other hand-held Internet devices can potentially be used for stalking or assaulting children.

As technology continues to evolve at breakneck speed, the Michigan House of Representatives today unanimously voted to define smartphones, iPads and other handheld devices as computers to better protect Michigan residents from serious Internet-related crimes. The state's current law prohibits the use of computers or the Internet to commit crimes such as sexual assault, kidnapping, bomb threats, stalking and sex-related crimes involving minors. "Today's huge technology changes have essentially given us a desktop computer that fits in the palm of our hand, and we must update our laws to better protect Michigan residents and children," said Rep. Mark Ouimet, R-Scio Township. House Bill 5284 updates the law to define handheld devices as "…

Commissioners voted 5-0 in favor of Dexter's proposed city boundary, which excludes the Gordon Hall property.

Local Democrats Slam House Republican Education Funding Bill

Gretchen Driskell, candidate for Michigan's 52nd House District, says the state should restore nearly $1 billion cut last year from K-12 funding.

Education reform was on the mind of Saline Mayor Gretchen Driskell on Monday. Driskell, a Democratic candidate for the 52nd House District, held a press conference at the Dexter District Library urging Gov. Snyder to restore nearly $1 billion in school aid funding to local schools. "The priorities of Lansing Republicans are out of step with our families in Michigan," Driskell, a mother of three, said. "We need the politicians in Lansing to listen to the people and recognize that a higher-quality education system is essential to our children's future and our state's economic recovery." The Legislature has set a target date of June 1 to send a budget to Gov. Snyder, and Driskell said both the House and Senate versions strip money from the …

Business Owners Respond to Proposed Michigan Legislation Regulating Barber Poles

Dexter Family Barber Shop owner says a proposed law could help ease the 'bandwagon' effect of barber shops coming back into popularity.

The iconic rotating red, white and blue pole found outside traditional barber shops is now at the center of new legislation. State Sen. John Gleason, D-Flushing, is pushing for legislation that will allow Michigan to join 10 other states that regulate the display of barber poles for only licensed barbers, according to The Detroit News. The lawmaker said he would like the pole to continue to be a symbol of traditional, fully licensed barbers, rather than any place that offers haircutting services. The bill was introduced in November, according to michiganvotes.org, and would prohibit establishments like hair salons from using the barber pole unless there was an accredited barber offering services there. Barbers must complete 2,000 hours of …
