Baker College of Jackson raises $1,000 for breast cancer research

Baker College of Jackson officials organized a campus  ‘Pink Out’ Thursday, Oct. 24, to raise awareness for breast cancer and support breast cancer research, according to Patricia A. Kaufman, Ed.D., Baker College of Jackson president.

Students and faculty wore pink and collected more than $1,000 to Susan G. Komen® for breast cancer research.

The first 150 people who donated $10 or more received a free Baker College of Jackson breast cancer awareness t-shirts.

Kaufman noted recent statistics from the American Cancer Society:

·            About one in eight, or 12 percent of the women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.

·            Death rates from breast cancer, now at about one in 36 (about three percent), have been declining since about 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.
