Paint Dexter Plein Air Festival

The Dexter Arts, Culture & Heritage Committee presents Paint Dexter Plein Air Festival, August 13-17, 2013. We have invited artists from all over the region and country to our beautiful community to paint the landscape and architecture. Dexter and the surrounding area offers the Plein Air artist a wealth if subject matter, as listed in the prospectus, including rivers, meadows, historical architecture, etc. This will allow the public to experience and observe artists actively painting everywhere in our community and countryside on Aug 14-16, and on Aug 17 for two hours as artists participating in the Quick Draw event quickly capture a painting or drawing. Under a large tent in Monument Park, Judging and awards will take place on Saturday August 17, and all artwork will be available for sale to the public. We have secured esteemed and award winning judges for this event. Frits Hoendervanger won 2nd prize in the Grand Rapids Art Prize in 2012, and Dee Overly has been featured in national art publications. This is a fundraiser event for the Dexter Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee. A portion of all art sales will go into our general fund to continue to support and provide opportunities and future events for our community to develop arts, culture and heritage programs, like the recent permanent sculptures in Mill Creek Park, and the Dexter Community Schools Light Pole Banner Art Contest. Schedule of Events: Aug 13: Artists sign in and commence painting until the 17th Aug 15: A painting demonstration by a local artist, Susan Amstutz, under the tent in Monument Park, 4pm. Aug 15: History of Plein Air Painting at Dexter District Library, 7pm. To truly appreciate this wonderful art form, we realize the importance of offering the public an opportunity to gain a better understanding and an appreciation of the nuances of Plein Air painting. Aug 16: All Dexter Community Schools artwork submitted for the light pole banner art contest will be on display inside the Tent Gallery in Monument Park, 160+ images of kids art! 3-8pm This will coincide with Music in The Park. Aug 17: Inside Tent Gallery in Monument Park beginning at 8am: Judging, awards, and a 3-hour Quick Draw Event. All artwork will be available for sale to the public at 2:30pm. The Dexter Symphony Orchestra will be performing at 4pm. The Current Schedule of Events, and the Artist Prospectus and Application can be found at: www.dextermi.gov/arts
