Fat Tuesday: Get Your Paczki On

Today is Paczki Day, also known as "Fat Tuesday," the day before Christians across the world enter into 40 days of penitence during the season of Lent.

Sugar, eggs and fat are traditionally combined to create a paczki, a traditional Polish doughnut filled with fruit or cream and dusted with powdered sugar or glazed.

Customary flavors of paczki are apple, prune, chocolate, strawberry, Bavarian cream, blueberry, lemon and raspberry.

Here are just a few places in your own backyard where you can go and grab a few of these sweet treats. 

• Busch's

has been carrying paczkis for a few weeks now, in all the traditional flavors. They are packaged and sold by the half or whole dozen for $4.99 and $7, respectively.

“If you want more than a dozen then you would need to place an order, but if you only want one dozen it won’t be a problem,” bakery representative Georgia Wieser said. “We’ll be getting customers right at 7 a.m., and it will most likely be steady through the entire day.”

• Dexter Bakery

Paczkis have been available at the since Monday and will be sold through Tuesday. They are available for $1.10 each.

• Main Street Bagel

Main Street Bagel in Chelsea is selling paczkis Tuesday until they sell out.

“We open at 7 a.m., and typically we will see customers coming through steadily all day," owner Mike Spadafore said.

Main Street Bagel charges $1.15 for each paczki, and they are available in all the traditional flavors.
