3-D Camp Coming to Dexter Arts Center

Local artist Sarah Davis will introduce children to three-dimensional art.

For children looking to squelch their midsummer boredom, a new summer art camp will begin Monday at the (DAC).

The camp, “Fun with Sculpture,” will focus on 3-D art and caters to children ages 6 and older.

“We’ll be working on a collage mural and sculptures using paper and clay,” instructor Sarah Davis said. “One day, I also plan to take the kids around Dexter to take a bunch of photos that will be used in a collage."

“Our turnout has been light, but I think that is because it’s our first year offering camps,” Davis said. “We plan to offer more programs next summer, too.”

The center is also offering two weeklong music camps beginning Aug. 15.

“Songwriting USA,” for children 12 and older, will take place from Aug. 15-19. Students will learn about the songwriting, performing and recording process. Each student will receive a recording of his or her song at the end of the camp. The cost is $175, plus $3 for the CD.

On Aug. 22-26, the center will offer “Be Your Own Recording Artist” for ages 12 and older. This camp will teach students the more technical aspects of recording music and introduces participants to new tools available in the recording industry. The cost is $175.

DAC instructor Lisa Wandres said the center will also be open during on Aug. 12-13. Throughout the weekend, the center will allow visitors to work on a community mosaic project, and instructors will sell DAC aprons for $15.

“We won’t be making a lot of money, but any little bit helps,” Wandres said.

Beginning in September, the center will offer new fall classes for children, teens and adults, including a watercolor journaling class and polymer clay class.

“We won’t be printing a brochure with our class offerings this year,” Davis said. “All of our class information will be available on our website.”
