American Quilter's Society Publishes Dexter Artist's Book

Lone Minkkinen will sign copies of her new book on Oct. 16 at the Dexter Cider Mill.

Dexter artist Lone Minkkinen is sharing her love of quilting through a newly published book, Quilting Designs from Nature.

The book, which features more than 100 pattern designs for quilters, was published by the American Quilter's Society in July.

“The book is something I’ve been working on for about a year,” Minkkinen said. “It has patterns ranging from dogs and horses to dragons and much more. It's all one-line designs, which means one stop and one start for the sewer.”

Minkkinen, a former resident of Denmark, said she considers herself an artist by trade, but quilting piqued her interest after a friend in Dexter taught her the craft 10 years ago.

“Quilting is not common in Denmark,” she said. “I think it’s a lot of fun, and more people should learn how to do it. It’s a wonderfully relaxing hobby."

The book includes patterns, tips and stories and caters to crafters of all abilities — from the seasoned professional to the beginning quilter.

“I spent a lot of time talking with other quilters to find out what they like,” Minkkinen said. “There’s so much I wanted to put in the book, but I decided to save some ideas that could go in another book in the future.”

Minkkinen will be at the Dexter Cider Mill at 11 a.m. Oct. 16 to sign copies of her book, which costs $20.

She will also hold a demonstration/book signing Nov. 19 at Ann Arbor Sewing & Quilting Center, 5235 Jackson Rd. Preregistration is required by calling 734-761-3094.

The book may also be purchased at seabrightart.com.

"If you are looking for nature-inspired quilting designs that are not just florals, you will find this a terrific resource," the International Society of Professional Quilters said in a press release.
