This February: Celebrate Airplane Day at the Foggy Bottom Cafe

Submitted by Dexter High School student Krista Shaeffer

Want to make a positive difference in the world? You are invited to attend “Airplane Day 2014” -- a celebration of Laurence Carolin, a 15-year-old Dexter student who died in January 2010 from a malignant brain tumor.

Laurence spent the last year of his life making people aware of extreme poverty and preventable disease, in the hopes that one day they would be eradicated. During his fight against cancer, Laurence donated the money from his Make-A-Wish gift to the United Nations Foundation, which works with ONE.org--a grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. ONE.org was co-founded by Bono of the rock band U2, whose music inspired Laurence, throughout his battle against cancer, to think outside of himself.

Airplane Day is the anniversary of Laurence's arrival in the U.S. when he was adopted from his birth country of South Korea. Laurence’s family and friends promised him that his goal to eliminate extreme poverty would live on in the form of a celebration around that date.
