Dexter Relief Fund Approaches $90,000; Disbursements Begin This Week

Families in Dexter and Dexter Township affected by the March 15 tornado will receive a letter and application in the mail.

What started off as a gesture of good faith from a few local businesses has spiraled into a massive financial relief campaign for residents of Dexter.

Through the cooperation of area service clubs, athletes, residents and businesses, the Dexter Relief Fund is set to break the $90,000 mark this week.

"Thanks to the generosity and support pouring in, we've received more than $83,000 to the Dexter Relief Fund so far to benefit those affected by the Dexter tornado. What's even more amazing is that we aren't done yet," Jason Stum of said. "We'll keep going until they tell us the need has been met."

"People are giving what they can afford," Stum said. "It's amazing to see everyone working together. (Thursday) a business dropped off a $1,000 check. It's a testament to the people of Dexter."

Nancy Paul, director of Faith in Action, a nonprofit food pantry serving Dexter and Chelsea, said disbursement of funds to the community should begin this week.

Paul said foundation organizers have been given a list of addresses of homeowners in Dexter Village and Dexter Township affected by the tornado. Letters detailing how to apply for funds, along with an application, will be mailed out to homeowners.

"Our primary goal is to get the money to homeowners, however, if there are businesses who sent staff out to aid in the recovery effort, they can certainly apply to recoup some of that cost as well," Paul said.

Applications will be distributed through Faith in Action and a review committee will determine the merits of residential claims.

"We're wanting to be as transparent as possible," Paul said. "Right now, we'll be distributing the funds in phases. We expect donations to continue to come in through the foreseeable future, so there are plenty of opportunities for residents to tap into this resource."
