Businesses Offer Retail Deals on Cyber Monday

Shop from the comfort of your home, but beware of online scams today.

If the bargains and craziness of Black Friday weren't for you, luckily, there are the more relaxing and convenient Cyber Monday sales for the rest of your holiday shopping needs. Today is the day dedicated to online deals.

But before you start entering your credit card information on just any website, be sure that you're prepared for online crimes.

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center recently released information helping online shoppers from falling victim to Internet crimes. Scammers are becoming more creative and use several techniques to fool online shoppers, according to the FBI. For example, fraudulent or stolen gift cards are being sold at reduced prices through auction sites and phishing e-mails and brand name merchandise is being sold at bargain prices, but end up being a counterfeit product.

Follow these tips from the Crime Complaint Center for safe online transactions:

  • Do not respond to unsolicited (spam) e-mail or click on links in those e-mails.
  • Avoid filling out forms contained in e-mail messages that ask for personal information.
  • Log on directly to the official website for the business identified in the e-mail, instead of "linking" to it from an unsolicited e-mail.
  • If you are requested to act quickly or there is an emergency, it may be a scam. Fraudsters create a sense of urgency to get you to act impulsively.
  • Remember if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Additionally, an ABC News article warns shoppers of online scams and also offers tips to avoid falling victim to online fraud, especially when deals require e-mail communication.

The article suggests checking e-mail addresses carefully. If a message comes from AppleSupport@yahoo.com, it is most likely not from Apple. Also, avoid opening attachments unless you know the sender of the e-mail. Another security option is using online security tools and services to ensure your credit card hasn't been hacked. ABC suggests visiting BillGuard, which scans your credit card bills for questionable charges. For more tips from the article read "Cyber Monday: 6 Tips to Avoid Getting Hacked or Scammed."
