Chelsea Community Hospital Breaks Ground on New Facility

The $60 million expansion will include a new emergency room and improved technology.

The Chelsea Community Hospital, a nonprofit hospital serving western Washtenaw County, broke ground on the first phase of a multimillion-dollar expansion to its facility near downtown Chelsea on Tuesday.

The $60 million expansion will include a 54-bed addition, a new X-ray and imaging area, a new emergency room, renovations to the hospital's outpatient and rehab therapy operations and a new front entrance and lobby. Also as part of the project, much of the hospital's parking and driveways will be improved and
redesigned.

"Though the hospital has expanded, renovated and improved upon its facilities several times since it opened in 1970, nothing of this caliber has been undertaken until now," the CCH said in a press release.

The hospital said construction is expected through late 2012 and will also include a new comprehensive cancer center, which will include radiation oncology and expanded services at the hospital's Infusion Center, which opened in November.

Funding for the construction project is a result of the hospital's 2009 merger
with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, CCH President and CEO Kathleen Griffiths said.

“We are so excited to begin this new chapter in the history of Chelsea Community Hospital,” Griffiths said. “I think the community will be very pleased with the new facility and the comfort and convenience it will bring to our patients and visitors. It will enable us to continue our goal to provide the highest-quality care to our patients.”
