Dexter Mill Says to Get Seeds for Spring Now

Keri Romine, manager of Dexter Mill, said seeds can be prepared indoors first.

Those occasional spring-like days can make a green thumb itch. However, it's still too early to start planting outside.

But it isn't too early to start buying seeds, said Keri Romine, manager of Dexter Mill. She said selecting the seeds and getting them started is appropriate for this time of the year.

"Everyone has been getting their seeds," she said. "Herb seeds are one of the first things we run out of."

After purchasing the right seeds, whether for flowers, basil, kale or tomatoes, Romine said to start them in indoor greenhouses. The indoor greenhouses are small planters, some that come with soil mix, that are great for starting seedlings.

"But you have to plan to move them up to the next size planter," she said.

The Dexter Mill also has peat moss planters that allow more room for the plant once it outgrows the indoor greenhouse planters. The plants can then be placed with the peat moss planters directly into the ground, Romine said.

"The middle of May is the earliest I would do it," she said about when to transfer plants outside.

Otherwise, she said, there is too much frost to worry about.
