Dexter Resident Opens Roadside Produce Market

Niedermeier Produce offers healthy selection of vegetables and fruit.

Dexter is home to a new and exciting produce market at the corner of North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney roads, on property owned by . Niedermeier Produce opened on Memorial Day weekend and business, according to owner Jennifer Niedermeier, looks promising.

Niedermeier, a registered nurse and mother of six, decided to open her own fresh produce market in Dexter after frequently shopping at a market that was on her route to school.

“I wanted to find a way to make healthy food affordable” Niedermeier said.

She approached Bear Claw Coffee about leasing space on its property, and the result is a season-to-season lease. The market’s current lease runs until the end of October.

The market’s tables are stocked full of more than 20 varieties of fresh vegetables and fruit, including tomatoes, onions, potatoes, peaches, melons, grapes and bananas. Neidermeier visits Detroit’s Eastern Market several times a week and hand-selects every item. Also available is “Mama’s Bread," a fresh, homemade wheat bread made by a local baker who mills her own wheat and keeps bees for the honey used in a lot of the baking.

“I am working on dealing more with local farmers,” Niedermeier said.

Coming soon to the market will be honey, maple syrup, seasonings and fresh potted herbs. Niedermeier has plans to start a newsletter as well, for sharing recipes and healthy-eating tips.

Niedermeier said her ultimate goal is to expand the market to a full-service deli offering fresh meats and more baked goods in addition to the produce already available.

“Every food choice (we offer) will be healthy,” she said. “I would even like to offer healthy-cooking classes."

The market is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, visit the market’s Facebook page or e-mail Niedermeier at jensonamission@gmail.com.
