Dexter's Responsible Dog Ownership Day Set for Saturday

Dog owners can take a "responsible canine" test, and paint with their dogs at the Canine Sports Recreation Center.

Dexter's Responsible Dog Ownership Day is right around the corner, and event planners are gearing up for a weekend of activities for their four-legged friends.

The event will take place from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 22 at Canine Sports Recreation Center, 7275 Joy Road in Dexter. Supported by the American Kennel Club, Responsible Dog Ownership Day events will be held simultaneously around the country.

Besides being able to watch dogs compete in agility contests, participants can paint with their dogs and there will also be a Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog International testing.

"We'll have water soluble paint and boards available for owners to paint pictures with their dogs, which in years past has been a big hit," event co-organizer Chris Schram said.

The Good Citizen test is open to any dog and costs $10.

According to the American Kennel Club website, the Canine Good Citizen program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. Areas evaluated on the test include: Accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, appearance and grooming, walking on a loose lead, walking through a crowd, sit/down/stay, coming when called, reaction to another dog, reaction to distraction, and supervised separation.

Dogs must be on leash, and no training or electronic collars are permitted during the test. All dogs who pass the Canine Good Citizen test will receive a certificate.
