Local Nursery Owner Turns Passion for Plants Into New Career

Mary Ann Doubles-Guthrie owner of Guthrie Gardens, let her passion for plants and gardening lead her from her corporate career to dedicating herself full-time to her own Dexter business.

"I have always had a passion for plants and gardening but made my living in the corporate world as a Sales Manager for wide format printing," she wrote.

How did your business come to be?:I opened the nursery for business in 2011 part time, sold full time in 2012 and left corporate for good in 2013 to dedicate my time to Guthrie Gardens.

What kind of services do you offer?: Beautiful Flowers and Decor.

What's a fact about your business that most customers probably don't know?: I left that industry in 2008 and worked for a landscaping company for a year. I remember thinking I can't believe I get to spend my days outside with plants! I started Guthrie Gardens in 2010 and began growing perennials, shrubs and trees. Went back to corporate for financial reasons. 

What do you want your business to be best known for?: Beautiful Flowers and Decor. And the fact that I love people and I love what I do...so many of the people that I have worked for become treasured friendships!

When was the business founded?: June 2010

Why did you choose to locate to Dexter?: I live in Dexter and the nursery is located on our property. We have ten acres so there is plenty of room to grow. I love Dexter and think it is such a friendly, quaint town.

I have a booth at the Dexter Farmer's Market and really enjoy the other vendors and all of the customers I have come to know that regularly come to the market. I grow my plants so I can give very honest, accurate information about them. Contact guthriegardens@gmail.com
