Small Business Shout Out: Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists

Learn more about this Dexter-based business in this week's Small Business Shout Out.

The following answers were provided by Bernie Ray, physical therapist and owner of Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists. If you have a business and want to participate in Patch's Small Business Shout Out you can fill out the form here.

When was the business founded?: "Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists of Dexter opened its doors on November 1st of 2012. Our local company was established in 2000 out of Hamburg, Michigan."

How did your business come to be?: "Our business was established in 2000 in Hamburg, Michigan by Rodney and Amy Goble. After years of providing high quality care along with winning multiple awards, community members and physicians had expressed a desire for Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists to open their doors within their own community. As a result of this local interest, Michigan Rehabilitation Specialist has developed over 20 locations now servicing the Washtenaw, Livingston, and Oakland County. We also have locations in the Okemos, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and Grand Blanc Regions."

Why did you choose to locate to Dexter?: "Dexter has always been community known for its active lifestyle and thrives on the passion and pride each community member brings to make this town special. Although over the past several decades there has been much growth, the foundation remains in the community members that have lived their whole lives. There are many families that have returned to Dexter after years of living in some other town and have no desire to move. In addition to the community members, Dexter has one of the elite school districts within the state, and develops a level of community pride in each of its students at all levels. Local businesses have shown a reflection of the community through years of success and the development of give back to the community programs. Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists withholds the same high standards of health and community well-being that has been present in Dexter for years. Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists will be located within the new Dexter Wellness Center once it opens its doors in June, 2013."

What kind of services do you offer?: "We provide high quality Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Athletic Training services. We have contracts with over a dozen local high schools within the vicinity to provide high quality care to athletes on the playing field. We have also developed the L.E.A.D foundation, which is a local non-profit organization to assist families in need."

What's a fact about your business that most customers probably don't know?: "Each of our locations has the owner working on site to provide care to the patients and to ensure that our high quality business standards are being met."

What do you want your business to be best known for?: "We want to be known for being the bridge that helps many community members remain active and independent with their daily activities and hobbies.  Whether the goal is to live independently, walk without pain, or return to sport specific activities, each patient will have an individualized plan to reach their desired goals."

What's your most popular product or service?: "Physical Therapy, Occupational and Athletic Training services are what we provide on a daily basis."

Is there any other way to vote besides Twitter, since I am not on that?

I am so sorry to hear of Michelle's passing. She fought very bravely and always with a smile on herRead More face. I am proud to have been able to work on fund raisers with her and will continue to fund raise in her memory. My sympathies to the Mike and the kids. Michelle will be greatly missed.

When the New and Improved Dexter Patch was introduced, the impetus that 'We,' decided it was needed.Read More It certainly wasn't the well read denizens of Dexter. It has the success of the introduction of the New Coke campaign. FAIL. Bring back the consummate reporter and editor Daniel Lai, who had journalism boots on the ground and through and through integrity.
Erin Paup June 3, 2013 at 10:56 am
The Dexter Patch has become completely unreadable and irrelevant. Starting with the removal ofRead More Daniel Lai, every change has been horrible. This used to be a good source for news. Now it's just a virtual community bulletin board half covered in ads.

Are there actually 'photos' here? With the old Patch format, I used to get an arrow to scrollRead More through multiple photos. If there is more than one 'photo' here, I can't figure out how to see them.

I agree, I look to this for local events and up to date news on things. If nothing else, at leastRead More make news in other communities be about our neighbors like Pinckney or Chelsea and Manchester.
Shawn Letwin June 2, 2013 at 10:02 am
Yes there was a "moving on" story about Daniel Lai (probably up for over a week). TheRead More Patch is "locals" posting "local" events. "We" are the reporters to provide the content for what "we" are looking to be informed about. If we want something different, we need to post it. Patch generates revenue from the content we provide and from the "clicks" we provide

I like reading about Chelsea, Pinckney and Manchester. But some of the recent lead stories reallyRead More have no personal factor for me. Probably what I mean by where's Daniel, is more where is the personal touch he added? Where's the local news written by a reporter? The announcements are good as far as they go, but it's hit or miss.

Thanks, BradP! There are rational, safety-conscious drivers like yourself in this world too!

An unfortunate event with no harm to anyone. Great that you saw that as a teachable moment..so inRead More some ways the other guy was on to something :) I have learned that when I point my one finger at someone else for doing something that I thought was wrong, I need to remember that I have 3 fingers pointing right back at me that make me check my part in the situation. The same being said that when I point at someone who I think has something better than me that I need to remind myself of what I should be grateful for. The other guy could have been a straight up jerk, or he has something going on in his life that you were not aware of...cause and effect are not always a straight line.

Perhaps you are right Shawn and she had something traumatic in her life to cause her to bothRead More physically react and scream out the car window at an 8 year old child. Hopefully, she will understand that she over-reacted and we will "bump" into each other again with better understanding, empathy and compassion. It was, as you can imagine, difficult for me to show restraint at such a bully.

AA.com tends to be down on Dexter. You get the news but with a lot of lame snarkiness.Read More Schadenfreude: pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others. Patch was always more reasonable and had superior comments, imho. How hard would it be to get a couple of local news articles from actual reporters? I would really like that.
Julie Wilkinson June 2, 2013 at 10:36 pm
Kudos to all of you commenting above. I wrote to the new editors of the Patch about 2 weeks afterRead More Daniel left and complained about the lack of news and especially local info. They told me that things were changing. If this is the change, I will not be reading Patch anymore. What a shame.

Hey, Wishful. - (Fragment, (consider revising) Nice to see that you've found our new Boards section.Read More (Fragment, (consider revising) It's going to be a great place to add community events, such as the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run. Feel free to post about it on the boards in the same way you posted this message. You also can add the event to our events calendar by visiting http://dexter.patch.com/posts/event/new. See you around the site! Flesch-Kinkaid Grade Reading Level, 5.8 The follow data is from Microsoft Office, Version 8.0, spelling and grammar check. This is not the high quality of intellectual banter, community members of the Village of Dexter are accustomed to. If Clara Peller was alive today, one glance at the new Dexter Patch would certainly illicit a response of, "Where's the beef?"
