Committee to Keep Dexter a Village

There has not been much said opposing the Village of Dexter becoming a city. Now that the issue is before the voters (May 7th), it is time to give a voice to the opposition.

In 2006, the Dexter Village Council commissioned a City Study Committee, which recommended pursuing cityhood in March 2007.  The Village Council then voted to begin the process by updating its boundary map and circulating petitions.  Spending over $62,000 on the process (per Village website), it took until May 2012, at which time the State Boundary Commission approved the Village going forward with the process of becoming a city.

In the summer of 2012 during the 45-day referendum period, a group of ten residents circulated petitions requesting a referendum to give our citizens the opportunity to voice their opinion for or against continuing the process.  If they vote Yes the process continues (with the election of a Charter Commission) and if they vote No the process is terminated.

There has not been much said about cityhood except the information distributed by the Village Government.  Now that the issue is before the voters (May 7th), it is time to give a voice to the opposition.

Thus, a group of residents have come together to form the COMMITTEE TO KEEP DEXTER A VILLAGE.  We will represent the residents and businesses who want to keep Dexter a Village.  Our mission is to inform and educate by presenting the issues, questions, opinions and facts.

Our first event is a Keep Dexter a Village Supporters Rally this Saturday, 10:00am at Foggy Bottom Coffee House.  We encourage members of the community who support staying a Village to come out and talk with the Committee.  New volunteers are welcome to join the group in helping communicate our message.
