Dexter Drama's CRAZY FOR YOU Opens to Standing Ovation!

Audiences are wild for Dexter Drama Club’s production of George and Ira Gershwin’s iconic musical Crazy For You. The high school’s winter musical opened last weekend to three consecutive standing ovations as students tap-danced and sang their way through hit songs such as “I Got Rhythm,” “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and “Slap that Bass!”  The show continues this weekend, February 7 and 8, at 7 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts, Dexter High School (DHS).

The production is directed by Erin Palmer, DHS teacher and drama club advisor, with vocal direction from Julie Bassett, Dexter Community Schools choral director. Tomi Dres is the assistant director, and Amanda Webster and Jessie Wise are the show’s choreographers. Dexter High School alum Charles Kemp conducts the pit orchestra. All told, the cast, pit, and crew of Crazy For You comprises nearly 150 students.

In the case of Crazy For You, the old adage “the show must go on” couldn’t be more true! Despite a Polar Vortex and several rehearsals lost to snow days, the production opened on time to rave reviews from the community.

The show’s plot moves the action from New York City to Deadrock, Nevada, as stage-struck New Yorker and banker’s son, Bobby Child, is sent to a small Western town to close down the local theater. After Bobby falls in love with the theater owner’s daughter, Polly, he comes up with a scheme to put on a show to raise money for the theatre.

With intricate dance numbers such as “I Got Rhythm,” skillfully choreographed by Webster and Wise, there is never a dull moment. From saloon fights to mistaken identities, the show provides plenty of laughs on the way to a finale where Bobby and Polly unite. If you enjoy classic Broadway musicals, Crazy For You is just the ticket!
