5 Things You Need to Know Today: April 27

Here is a look at what's going on today around the Dexter area.

It's the weekend, and that means our daily 5 includes plenty of local events for families to enjoy.

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts today will be mostly cloudy with a high near 53 degrees. There is a chance of showers after 2 a.m. Friday night, with a low around 35 degrees.

2. Wings and Things (children's program)

Come learn about birds, bats, butterflies and other things that fly today from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Leslie Science and Nature Center. Meet live birds of prey, an go on a bird hike. The cost is $7 per child. Registration is not required.

3. Sloppy Joe and Boston Cooler Night

American Legion Post 419 in Pinckney will be serving Sloppy Joe dinners for $2 with additional Sloppy Joes for $1. Boston Coolers are also $1. Dinners will be served from 5-8 p.m.

MichiganGasPrices.com reports the following gasoline prices in the Dexter area as of Thursday night:

5. This day in history

April 27, 2009: On this day General Motors revealed it plans to discontinue production of its more than 80-year-old Pontiac brand. Pontiac's origins date back to the Oakland Motor Car, which was founded in 1907 in Pontiac by Edward Murphy. For more historic dates, visit www.history.com.
