5 Things You Need to Know Today: Aug. 9

Here's a look at some events going on around the Dexter area today.

The daily 5 has the weather forecast, gas prices, and some suggestions on how to spend your day.

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts showers and possibly a thunderstorm today after 7 a.m., with a high around 76 degrees. Thursday night there is a 100 percent chance of rain with a low around 58 degrees.

2. World War II presentation

Bill Ingham tells his story of working as a slave laborer building the "Death Railway" between Thailand and Burma, which included the infamous Bridge on the River Kwai. The presentation takes place at the today at 6:30 p.m.

3. Brew for the River

Back by popular demand, five Ann Arbor microbreweries are teaming up with Huron River Watershed Council to sponsor a night dedicated to water, beer, and the people who love both.

The Wolverine, located at 2019 West Stadium Blvd., kicks off the event today. Brewer Duncan Williams will premiere a new beer, Honey Creek. Also, don’t forget to pick up your Brew for the River Passport at Wolverine for $5 (Get all five stamps and you’ll be entered to win the grand prize).

All of the Brew Events are free and open to the public. The brewers are donating a portion of proceeds from sales to HRWC. The only cost is to participate in the optional passport activity. Get a Brew Passport at the first event at Wolverine on Aug. 9. Attend all five events and get five stamps on the passport to be eligible for a grand prize drawing at the Blue Tractor on Sept. 6. The grand prize is a growler a month for 10 months, from the participating microbreweries.

5. This day in history

Aug. 9. 1969: On this day in 1969, members of Charles Manson's cult killed five people in movie director Roman Polanski's Beverly Hills, Calif., home, including Polanski's pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate. Less than two days later, the group killed again, murdering supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary in their home.
