5 Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 23

Here is a look at what's going on today around the Dexter area.

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts a slight chance of snow before 11 a.m. today, then a chance of rain and snow, with a high near 39 degrees. Snow is expected tonight, with 2 to 4 inches possible.

2. Microsoft Word workshop

Working hands-on at a computer, participants will learn how to create basic documents using Word 2007. Learn how to download and use document templates. Practice different ways to duplicate, move and edit text. The workshop takes place at 9:30 a.m. at the Dexter District Library. Registration is required.

3. Boys basketball versus Lincoln

The Dexter freshmen, junior varsity and varsity boys' basketball teams will take on Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti beginning at 4:30 p.m. today.

MichiganGasPrices.com reports the following gasoline prices in the Dexter area as of Wednesday night:

5. This day in history

Feb. 23, 1945: During the Battle for Iwo Jima in World War II, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division took the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island's highest peak and most strategic position, and rose the U.S. flag. Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and recorded the event, according to History.com.
