5 Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 7

Here's a look at some events going on around the Dexter area today.

The daily 5 has the weather forecast, gas prices, and some suggestions on how to spend your day.

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies today, with a high near 34 degrees. Monday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 24 degrees.

2. Adult Winter Reading Club

Looking for something to help you avoid the winter blahs? Consider signing up for the Dexter District Library’s new adult winter reading program - Hot Reads for Cold Nights. This program is open to all adults and will run from Jan. 7 through Feb. 28.

Sign up starts on Jan. 4 at the Adult Service desk. Participants will receive a reading journal and a list of books. You will choose whatever you would like to read over the winter and can keep track of your reading in your journal. There will also be three scheduled group meetings to talk about what you are reading or just hear what other members are reading.

3. Bible study

Dexter United Methodist Church will host a Bible study today at 7 p.m. The topic of the study is "Heaven is Real."

4. Gas prices

MichiganGasPrices.com reports the following gasoline prices in the Dexter area as of Sunday night:

  • $3.22 a gallon (regular) BP, 200 Baker Rd.
  • $3.25 a gallon (regular), Sunoco, 2940 Baker Rd.
  • $3.23 a gallon (regular), Pilot Service Station, 195 Baker Rd.

  • $3.35 a gallon (regular), BP, 8135 Main St.
  • $3.35 a gallon (regular), Mobil, 7177 Dexter-Ann Arbor Rd.

5. This day in history

Jan. 7, 1789: On this day in 1789, America's first presidential election was held. Voters cast ballots to choose state electors; only white men who owned property were allowed to vote.
