5 Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 12

Here's a look at some events going on around the Dexter area today.

The daily 5 has the weather forecast, gas prices, and some suggestions on how to spend your day.

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts showers today before 1 p.m., with temperatures falling to around 34 degrees by 5 p.m. Monday night there is a chance of snow showers, with a low around 28 degrees.

2. Dexter Village Council meeting

The Dexter Village Council meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Dexter Senior Center. A copy of the agenda is available for download at http://www.villageofdexter.org/.

3. Hydrant Flushing

Hydrant flushing will continue this week in the Village of Dexter. Areas include Dexter Crossing, Walkabout Creek, Dexter Ann Arbor Road and downtown, and original village neighborhoods

As crews flush hydrants there may be some discoloration of the water. Residents who experience “rust colored” water should simply run the cold water tap for a few minutes to clear the household pipes. The rust coloring is caused by a natural build up of minerals in the water system.

If you have questions, contact the Utility Department at 426-4572 during the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

4. Gas prices

MichiganGasPrices.com reports the following gasoline prices in the Dexter area as of Sunday night:

  • $3.45 a gallon (regular) BP, 200 Baker Rd.
  • $3.45 a gallon (regular), Sunoco, 2940 Baker Rd.
  • $3.45 a gallon (regular), Pilot Service Station, 195 Baker Rd.
  • $3.45 a gallon (regular), Pilot Service Station, 750 Baker Rd.
  • $3.55 a gallon (regular), BP, 8135 Main St.
  • $3.55 a gallon (regular), Mobil, 7177 Dexter-Ann Arbor Rd.

5. This day in history

Nov. 12, 1954: On this day in 1954, Ellis Island, the gateway to America, shut it doors after processing more than 12 million immigrants since opening in 1892.
