Area Events Provide Summer Fun for Children

Here is a look at some events going on in and around Dexter this week.

Dexter Patch has picked out the best locales for family-friendly fun this week. Enjoy a day at the beach or head out to Hudson Mills Metropark for a Fourth of July celebration!

  • “Super Stories” and “Book Snackers” Book Clubs

Where/when?: Dexter District Library, Wednesday. “Super Stories” begins at 11 a.m. and “Book Snackers” begins at 1 p.m.

Why go?: “Super Stories” is a fun book-themed club for kindergartners through second-graders. “Book Snackers” is for kids in third through fifth grade. Registration is required. Contact the library at 734-426-4477 to register or obtain more information.

  • Henna Tattoo Workshop

Where/when?: Dexter District Library, Thursday at 2 p.m.

Why go?: Kids in grades five through 12 can learn all about the temporary art form of henna tattoos for free and even learn how to apply one to their own bodies. Registration is required. Call the library at 734-426-4477 to register.

Pricing: Free.

  • Horseback Riding

Where/when?: Highwater Corral,  10866 Cedar Lake Rd. at Hell Creek Ranch in Pinckney, all weekend long.

Why go?: Enjoy an exciting guided trail ride for the whole family or a simple pony ride for the little ones. Contact Highwater Corral for more information at 734-954-0500.

Pricing: Guided trail rides: $25 and up. Hand-led pony rides: $5 and up.

  • Fireworks

Where/when?: Hudson Mills Metropark, Sunday at 10 p.m.

Why go?: Pack up the family and a cozy blanket for a night of fun and fireworks at the park. There will be live classic rock music at the activities center from 7-11 p.m., with a break at 10 p.m. for the fireworks. Food service will be available at the activity center.

Pricing: Free.

  • Fun in the Sun

Where/when?: Independence Lake Park. The beach is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Spray Zone is open 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. all weekend.

Why go?: The kids will have a blast cooling off running through dozens of sprinklers in the Spray Zone or jumping in the waves at the beach. This is a great day of family fun.

Cost: Washtenaw County residents’ annual pass: $25. Daily pass: $5.
