Area Festivals Offer Variety of Activities for Families

Here is a look at some of the events going on around the area this week.

With temperatures peaking at around 90 degrees this week, try cooling off at some of the family-fun activities in the Dexter area.

1. Ice Cream Social

Where/when?: Dexter Farmers’ Market next to the , Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Why go?: The weather is hot, the ice cream is cold. Show your library card and get a cone for free. There are also drop-in crafts for kids of all ages.

Pricing: Free.

2. Manchester Community Fair

Where/when: 220 E. Vernon St. in Manchester, today through Saturday.

Why go?: The Manchester Community Fair promises to be a week packed with fun, including horse events, livestock judging, dancing, live music, laser tag, a rodeo, crafts, games and a lot of great food. Visit the fair’s website for more information.

Pricing: Mega pass, $36.

3. Balloon Fun at Chelsea Farmers' Market

Where/when: Chelsea Farmers' Market, Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Why go?: The Chelsea MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group will teach children games and fun projects to do with simple balloons. Some of the projects include a "dancing balloon," "walk on air" and even how to make a balloon-powered car.

Pricing: Free.

4. Saline Celtic Festival

Where/when: Mill Pond Park, 565 W. Bennett St. in Saline, Friday from 6-11 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.  

Why go?: The Celtic Festival promises to be an action-packed weekend of fun and culture for the whole family. Attendees will enjoy everything from a 5K run/walk to dance competitions, live music and even a "Mr. Pretty Legs" competition for kilt-wearing men. Pricing: $5 on Friday; $10 on Saturday. Children 12 and under and active military members are admitted free.

5. Strawberry and Pea Picking

Where/when: Rowe’s Produce Farm, 10570 Martz Rd. in Ypsilanti, open daily 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Why go?: Stop in and pick fresh strawberries, raspberries and peas through mid-July. You can also visit the produce market on-site and pick up some fresh corn.
