Celebrate Earth Day While Conserving Money

Earth Day celebrations are all around us this weekend. Whether you want to catch a movie or try your hand at geocaching, Patch has options for you to choose from. Here are five fun activities for your family that won't break the bank.

1. Earth Day Festival

Deal: Nearly 50 local, nonprofit environmental exhibitors will provide information and hands-on activities at the Leslie Science and Nature Center. Activities and entertainment for youth are featured with hands-on activities and crafts that help explore our natural world.

Good through: This is a one-day event that takes place on Sunday. The free event will be held from noon to 4 p.m.

2. Go geocaching in Dexter

Deal: The is open and awaiting exploration. Grab your GPS or smartphone, download the geocaching app, and head over to Dexter's outdoor parks to search for treasure.

Good through: The geocache trail is open indefinitely.

3. Decorate a book bag

Deal: Stop by the Ypsilanti District Library, 5577 Whittaker Road, from 2-3 p.m. on Monday to decorate your own library book bag to create a "green" way to carry your library materials to and from school or the library. The materials are free and kids are only limited by their imaginations. This free event is geared for kids age 8 and older. For more information, call the library at 734-482-4110, Ext. 1340.

4. Help clean-up the Metroparks

Deal: On Tuesday, several of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks are offering free admission and lunch to families who come to help beautify the land during the Huron-Clinton Metropark Spring Clean-up Day. Be sure to reserve your spot ahead of time, that might include pulling garlic mustard or possibly other small activities.

Good through: April 24

5. Transition Town Chelsea Earth Day celebration

Deal: Hear a brief introduction to transition towns and watch the movie "Earth Days." Celebrate with drums and dance with Tree of Life Cultural Arts Studio. Refreshments will be provided.
