Community Briefs: Dexter Schools Plan Day of Service; Rotary Club Welcomes Exchange Student

Here is a brief look at some recent newsworthy events happening in Dexter.

Dexter Community Schools' Day of Service

Dexter Community Schools is designating Friday as a Dexter Day of Service.

"In recognition of the heroic efforts of so many in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA, staff and students will be encouraged to participate in a unified drive to provide for those in need in western Washtenaw County," Superintendent Mary Marshall said in a press release.

Student contributions will have different levels of meaning at different grade levels. In the younger grades, staff members will focus on the goodwill of the contribution. In other classrooms, teachers will have more direct conversation about the connection to Sept. 11, 2001. The items collected will be donated to Faith in Action, an organization that supports families and individuals needing assistance in Dexter.

In addition to this districtwide activity, the , in collaboration with the Dexter Community School Orchestras, will host a concert in the memory of Don Parrish, founder of both orchestras, with a specific focus on recognition of the heroes of 9/11. The concert will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at .

Dexter Rotary Club sponsors Croatian exchange student

Leticija Oreski, an exchange student from Croatia, will attend classes at Dexter High School during the 2011-2012 school year. She arrived in the United States on Aug. 18.

During the Dexter Rotary Club's Aug. 25 meeting, Leticija was greeted enthusiastically by club members. The club presented Laticija with a welcome cake prepared in her honor by chef Doug Hewitt of . President Steve Feinman presented her with a Rotary Club of Dexter polo shirt and coffee mug.

"We’re looking forward to a great year for Laticija. So look for that special event for her to participate in with you as the year goes on," Feinman said.
