Community Briefs: Flu Shots Available at Dexter Senior Center

Here is a brief look at some newsworthy stories happening in and around Dexter.

Flu shot clinic planned

The will hold a flu vaccine clinic on Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. Customers will be taken on a first come first serve basis. The cost for the flu shot is $30 if you do not have insurance accepted by Michigan Visiting Nurses. Payment can be made with cash, check or credit card. The following insurances are accepted: Blue Care Network, BCBS of Michigan PPO, BlueCaid, HAP (except HAP Senior Plus), Health Plus, Priority Health PPO/HMO, Medicare, BCBS of Michigan Medicare Plus Blue PPO, BCN Advantage, or HealthPlus MedicarePlus Advantage HMO/PPO.  Insurance cards must be presented to clinic staff. Girls on the Run recieves grant from Art Van Furniture

Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan was recently awarded a $15,000 grant from Art Van Furniture as part of the Art Van Million Dollar Charity Challenge. The group is now competing for an additional grant up to $25,000, awarded based on votes received from visitors to the website www.artvancharitychallenge.com. Supporters of Girls on the Run are invited to vote once per day through Sept. 30.

“We are very proud that we have never had to turn a family away for their inability to pay our registration fee. Thanks to the support of local donors and companies, like Art Van Furniture, we awarded $54,590 in scholarships to 504 families in southeastern Michigan in the last eight months alone," Danielle Plunkett, executive director of Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan said. "We have served over 2,000 girls and families in 2011 and anticipate growing by at least 50 percent in 2012.

"Receiving an additional $25,000 in funds would help us continue to ensure that every girl who wants to participate in our life changing program is able to.”

Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan is a nonprofit organization that serves Washtenaw, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe and Livingston counties. Volunteers teach young girls physical, emotional, mental and social well-being life skills through community outreach programs.
