Dexter, Chelsea Farmers Markets Receive Grant for Canning Demonstrations

The Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation applied for the grant through Jarden Home Brands' "Discover You Can" program.

The Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation recently received a grant from the Farmers Market Coalition home canning demonstrations and education programs in western Washtenaw County communities.

The demonstrations will take place at the Dexter Farmers Market, Chelsea Farmers Market, Stockbridge Open Air Market, and Chelsea’s Wednesday Bushel Basket Market.

These markets were selected from 140 entrants by the Farmers Market Coalition and Jarden Home Brands, makers of Ball preserving products, to take part in this summer's "Discover You Can" program.

Free canning instruction booklets, coupons and sample packs will be distributed by the markets, helping to educate communities on the benefits and ease of buying and preserving local, seasonal food.

Each market will also offer the opportunity to win prizes such as Ball brand canning starter kits and recipe books. Educational programs will be held throughout the summer, including canning demonstrations in Dexter on July 21 and Oct. 6.
