Dexter District Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Program

The activities include video game challenges and crafts.

Teens are invited to participate in the 2011 Teen Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme, “You Are Here,” offers a travel flair, and many programs will take you to exciting places. 

Incentive prizes and entry into the weekly prize drawings will be available throughout the summer for teens who read three hours or more per week and visit the library each week. Teens who read three or more hours per week for all seven weeks of the program will receive a goody bag for meeting the program goal and also be entered into the grand prize drawing.

The library has a variety of fun and interesting programs lined up for teens, and a $5 gift card for will be given out at the end of every teen summer reading program event. Bring your friends down and check out what’s going on at the library. Many of the programs geared for teens require registration in order to ensure sufficient supplies are on hand, and age restrictions allow presenters to tailor information to the appropriate age group.  

On Monday at 7 p.m., members of Salle d’Etroit Fencing Club will share their knowledge of fencing and show off some fancy footwork. This program is geared for everyone in grade five and up, and registration is required.

Haven’t made it to the beach yet? Get your hands in the sand and make sand art on Tuesday between 1-2:30 p.m. The library will provide all the supplies for this fun craft. This drop-in program is for ages 10 and up.

Recycling will be the theme on Thursday when Upcycle with Artist Tracie Lampe visits the library at 7 p.m. Teens can learn how to fuse old plastic bags into new, cool totes. The program is for grades six-12, and registration is required. 

The library has scheduled two Henna tattoo workshops for the week of June 27. Teens can learn all about this amazing temporary art form and how to apply it to their body. The programs are scheduled on June 27 at 2 p.m. and June 30 at 2 p.m. This program is geared for kids in grades five through 12 and registration is required. Due to space limitations, please register for just one of the two dates.

Teens can sing their heart out at the library’s karaoke pizza party on June 28 from 11 a.m. to noon. Come and sing your favorite songs, enjoy some pizza and have a great time with your friends. This event is for teens and kids age 9 and up, and registration is required.

Movie and snacks for teens comes to the library on July 5 at 2 p.m. Teens are invited to sample some Indian snacks while watching the Bollywood hit Bride and Prejudice (Rated PG-13).

You can "Paint a Plate" (or cup, or bowl) on July 7 between 2-3:30 p.m. during this drop-in craft for ages 10 and up. Use paint markers to transform ordinary ceramics into works of art.

Get in shape with BollyFit—Fitness Through Dance on July 11 from 2-3 p.m. Teens and kids in grades five through 12 are invited to meet BollyFit owner Anuja Rajendra, who will talk about India’s music and dance and how she combines the two for a fun, energizing workout. Wear comfortable clothing and be ready to move. Registration for this program is required.

The library will host a "Tie Dye Workshop" on July 12 at 11 a.m. for teens and kids ages 9 and up. Bring a white cotton T-shirt, and we’ll supply the rest. In order to ensure adequate supplies, registration for this program is required.

Feeling stressed? Make a worry doll to place under your pillow and all your worries will disappear. The library is pleased to host a Guatemalan Worry Doll drop-in craft on July 15 from 2-3:30 p.m. This program is geared for ages 10, and up and registration is required. Central American snacks will be provided.

Can you "smash" the competition? Come find out when the library hosts a Nintendo Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Pizza Party on July 18 from 2-3:30 p.m. Play Wii on the library’s 16-foot giant screen and enjoy some pizza with friends. This program is for ages 9 and up, and registration is required.

Learn the fine art of paper folding with Ming the Magnificent, when he presents origami on July 19 from 1-3 p.m. This program is for ages 9 and up, and registration is required.  

The library will host a sushi workshop on July 22 at 2 p.m. Bring a container to carry home your finished (vegetarian) product. Everyone in grades six through 12 is welcome to attend, but registration is required.

Impress the judges and win a prize at the library’s LEGO contest on July 26. The library will provide the LEGOs. Several sessions for different age groups will be held. Registration is required.

Super Science Day with the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum comes to the library on July 28 from 2-3 p.m. Teens and kids age 10 and up can explore 10 stations of cool science experiments. Registration for this program is required.

Kick back, eat popcorn and join us for a Monday matinee on Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. The library will show the animated feature Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (Rated PG).

BINGO for Books! returns to the library on Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. Play BINGO for a chance to win a new book. This program is for kids ages 6 and up.

Everyone is a suspect at our Murder Mystery Party on Aug. 5 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Join other teen detectives to investigate the crime scene and examine all the evidence. Enjoy dinner while judges review solutions to the mystery and choose the winning team. This program is for teens in sixth through 12th grade only, and registration is required.
