Africa poem
By Reggie Swoverland

You close your eyes and open them again
You are now in a place that you first can’t quite explain
You realize you are on a dusty dirt road in the middle of Africa
You walk down the lonely dirt road
The wind picks up and brushes on the side of the road rumble while the dust starts to tumble and the dust dyes your clothes a dirty rusty orange

You continue walking down this
Lonely road
Empty street
Boulevard of broken dreams

The road ends as you enter a market in a small village
Songs play you see spaces, places
Different people
Different faces
Kids on the street
without enough to eat
People with no shoes on their feet

You open your eyes from this everyday daydream
You're on a busy road
You recognize this, It’s your hometown
Just walking to work
You were just thinking about Africa
But within your mind the images stick
Mortared glued and covered with brick

You continue on the busy road
People walking on the street
People with enough to eat
People with shoes on their feet

For the rest of the day the images stuck
Make you feel filled with luck
The clothes you wear
The food you eat
You walk back home on safe concrete

In front of your apartment you open the door and stop
Look up to the stars and think about Africa you feel like you were just there
Go back in the building and think life’s just not fair
