Dexter Relay for Life Team Seeks Submissions for Community Cookbook

Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Calling all chefs.

The team, "The Tribe," is seeking submissions for a new community cookbook. The cookbook is one of the team's fundaising activities this year, with all proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society (ACS).

"We're asking anyone or any business in the community to contribute a recipe," team member Nicole Esper said. "It doesn't cost anything and you don't have to be a professional chef. This is just something fun we're trying to do to raise money for the ACS."

Throughout the year, various relay teams "compete" in a friendly competition for bragging rights to see who can raise the most money leading up to the community's Relay event. Esper said the idea for a cookbook was inspired by another team's calendar.

"Relay for Life teams are coming up with more creative ways to raise money for the ACS. When I saw the 'BRAve Men of Dexter' calendar I knew I had to come up with something that was just as fun," she said.

Esper said Malloy Inc., a family-owned book publisher in Ann Arbor, is donating the cost of printing 200 cookbooks with a full color cover once she receives 60-70 receipes.

"We currently have about 10 receipes and I'm hoping we can get enough by the end of October or early November so I can have the book printed and ready for purchase for the holidays," Esper said.

The book will be divided into sub-categories, including entrees, breads, desserts and appetizers by local Dexter residents.

"If you have an old family recipe lying around and you want to contribute, we'll take anything," she said. "Anyone who contributes will have their name printed next to the recipe."

Recipes with ingredients and directions can be submitted to thetribe_dexter@yahoo.com. Recipes can also be submitted on The Tribe's Facebook page, or by calling 734-904-2925. Cookbooks will be for sale for $10 in December.

In addition, commitee members are needed to help plan this year's Relay for Life, which is scheduled for May 19-20 at Monument Park in Dexter. Committee members will help coordinate volunteers, plan entertainment, recruit relay teams and help with event logistics. For more information on volunteer opportunities, call 734-904-2925.
