Dexter Relay for Life Teams Needed

Volunteers are needed to help organize this year's event at Monument Park in Dexter on May 19-20.

On Thursday the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Dexter will officially get underway as event volunteers and participants gather at the for a kick-off rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year.

Now in it's sixth year in Dexter, the Relay for Life is a 24-hour fundraiser benefiting cancer research. Teams are formed throughout the community and members take turns walking the track around Monument Park throughout the day and night on May 19-20.

The kick-off event will take place at 7 p.m. and includes information on the event, how to sign up for a team, volunteer oppportunities as well as fun and games.

"It's a great information night for anyone who might be curious about the relay," volunteer Nicole Esper said. "There is no requirement that you have to commit to a team."

Esper said event organizers are hoping more residents volunteer for committee positions and start more teams.

"Right now we have eight teams registered, which is down from 14 during last year," Esper said. "We will find a spot for anyone who is willing to help out."

Prior to the kick-off, the Friends and Family team will host a fundraiser all day at the .

Ten percent of the day's proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. The team will also be selling their "BRAve Men of Dexter" calendar at the event. The other places in Dexter that you may purchase calendars are: , , , , , , , , and .
