Dexter Village Officials Support Small Business Saturday

American Express, Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce encourage residents to shop local on Nov. 26.

The Dexter Village Council has tipped its hat to the day after the biggest shopping day of the year, issuing a proclamation in support of American Express' Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26.

Small Business Saturday is "a day to support small business owners, help fuel the economy, and invigorate communities across the country," the company said in a press release. This is the second year American Express is running the promotion meant to encourage consumers to shop in locally owned, non-chain stores.

"This is a great benefit for all of our small businesses in Dexter," Abby Erickson, executive director of the said.

The village's proclamation states that the village council will support “efforts to promote economic development within the community and to support our local businesses and the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce.”

In conjunction with Small Business Saturday, the chamber will hold a new holiday event, , in downtown Dexter. Events include a festive window decorating contest, a visit with Santa and the lighting of the village Christmas tree in at 5 p.m.

Buisnesses will also be open for holiday shoppers and carolers will entertain families throughout the afternoon.

American Express will reward card holders with a special $25 statement credit offer when they register their card and spend $25 or more on Small Business Saturday at any qualifying small business that accepts the American Express Card.

American Express is also giving $100 in free Facebook advertising to the first 10,000 business owners who sign up for a credit account. FedEx is also encouraging consumers to shop locally. All month long it's been giving away "Shop-Small" American Express gift cards, each worth $25, to consumers through its own Facebook page and offering a special 20 percent savings to businesses that use FedEx Office Print Online to print Small Business Saturday materials through the event.
