Fundraising Effort Under Way for Dexter's Henry Thurston Field House Dedication

Dexter Bakery, Classic Pizza and Dexter's Pub will each host a "Henry Thurston Day" fundraiser in the next seven days.

When it comes to sports, that term is synonymous with the name Henry Thurston.

Thurston, who died in 2010 following a hard-fought battle with cancer, dedicated 47 years to the DHS sports program as a team manager. Now residents Dick Ulrich and Lou Ceriani want to make sure their friend’s contributions will never be forgotten.

Ulrich and Ceriani, along with local businesses, will host two "Henry Thurston Day" fundraisers in the seven days. The men are seeking donations for letters that will spell out Thurston’s name on two sides of the field house at the DHS football field.

“With Henry being such a big part of the sports program at Dexter, we thought this would be a nice honor,” Ceriani said.

As part of the fundraising effort, will hold a fundraiser today, the will hold a fundraiser for the project Friday, and will hold one Aug. 30, during which 10 percent of the day's sales will assist the effort.

Ceriani said the lettering will cost between $1,800 and $2,000. Any donations that exceed the cost of purchasing the letters will be used in a memorial scholarship.

“Everyone in Dexter knew Henry and loved him,” Ceriani said. “He had a lot of friends. Even Lloyd Carr, former University of Michigan football coach, would come and visit Henry at the bakery.

“Henry never said a mean word about anyone. He loved being part of the Dexter sports program. The players made him feel welcome and part of the team.”

Donations can be sent to Lou Ceriani, Box 53, Dexter, MI 48130.

Ceriani said dedication of the field house will take place Sept. 16, with members of Thurston’s family present at the ceremony.
