Get Out: 5 Things to Do This Weekend

Food lovers can enjoy chocolate and chili at events in Chelsea and Ypsilanti.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend.

1. GOODRICH QUALITY THEATERS

Where/When: Goodrich Quality 16, 3686 Jackson Rd. in Ann Arbor, is showing Tangled, a remake of the classic German fairy tale Rapunzel that is sure to please children. Multiple viewings all weekend.

Why go?: A night out at the movies is a great way to spend time with the family. With 16 movies to choose from, Goodrich has something for everyone—including those looking to brush up on their film knowledge before the Academy Awards on Feb. 27.

Pricing: Before 4 p.m. tickets are $6.50 for children, $6.75 for seniors and $7 for adults; from 4-6 p.m. tickets are $6.25; and after 6 p.m. tickets are $9.50 for adults, $7  for seniors and $6.50 for children.

2. ANN ARBOR CIVIC THEATRE

Where/When: The Ann Arbor Civic Theatre is holding its second annual chili cook-off Sunday from noon-3 p.m. at the Corner Brewery, 720 Norris St. in Ypsilanti.

Why go?: There will be 15 chili contestants, special judges, beer tasting and a silent auction with more than 50 items. You might win something for your sweetheart for Valentine's Day.

Pricing: $20 regular price for 10 chili tastes and five beer samples and tasting glass; $10 for chili tastes and nonalcoholic beverages. Admission for children ages 5 to 10 is $5, while children 4 and under are admitted free. Extra beer or chili samples are $1 each.

3. CHOCOLATE EXTRAVAGANZA

Where/When: The city of Chelsea is holding its chocolate extravaganza throughout the downtown area from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.

Why go?: It’s that time of year to express our love, and what better way to do it than through chocolate? Bring a loved one to downtown Chelsea on Saturday to shop, eat, and "experience" chocolate. Participating stores throughout Chelsea
will offer free chocolate tasting, sales on chocolate-themed merchandise, door prizes and family-fun activities.

4. ENCORE MUSICAL THEATRE

Where/When: The Encore Musical Theatre in Dexter continues its 2011 season with Little Women: The Musical. Shows are at 8 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. To order tickets, visit the Encore online.

Why go?: Little Women embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit for you and your friends and family. A night out on the town is also a great way to keep local funding in Dexter.

Pricing: Adults: $28. Groups of 10 or more: $22 each. Seniors (ages 55 and older): $25. Youth (ages 17 and younger): $25.

5. HOWELL NATURE CENTER

Where/When: The Howell Nature Center, located at 1005 Triangle Lake Rd. in Howell, is offering a photography workshop at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Why go?: You will have the opportunity to photograph four to six birds of prey in a beautiful natural setting. The workshop is under the direction of Steve Gettle, a professional nature photographer. Slide show and lunch are included. The workshop is four hours.

Pricing: $60 for nonmembers and $55 for Howell Nature Center members.
