Get Out: Five Things to Do This Weekend

Here's a look at some fun activities for families and couples happening in the area this weekend.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend.

Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit and new bars/restaurants/shops to explore.

Find out what's happening in Dexterwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Where/When: The Dexter Knights of Columbus will continue its weekly fish fry at the  beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Why go?: The all-you-can-eat buffet-style dinner has fish, a salad and potato bar, desserts and other tasty treats. It's a great way to feed the family while supporting a local organization.

Pricing: $10 for walk-ins and $9 for drive-through. Children's meals cost $5.

2. JOURNEY TO THE SUGAR BUSH

Where/when: Activity Center, Saturday and Sunday.

Why go: Take a journey to the sugar bush on a guided tour. You will travel back in time and experience how maple syrup has been made through the years. You may also get a chance to tap a tree. You’ll probably work up an appetite, so stay for the all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Preregistration is required. Call 734-426-8211 to register or for more information.

Cost: The guided tour costs $3; the pancake breakfast costs $3.50 per child or $5.50 per adult.

3. USED BOOK SALE

Where/When:  will hold a used book sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

Why go?: The used book sale is a great way to support the projects of the Friends of the Dexter District Library as well as find some hidden treasures for adults and children.

Cost: Varies depending on book.

4. GREAT LAKES SHIPWRECK FESTIVAL

Where/When: The event takes place at the Morris Lawrence Building at Washtenaw Community College, 4800 E. Huron River Dr. in Ann Arbor, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Why go?: This year’s program features several significant new Great Lakes shipwreck discoveries, including the Lady Elgin—a once-palatial sidewheel steamer whose sinking in Lake Michigan in 1860 resulted in the deaths of more than 300 people—and the Marion Egan, a Civil War-era two-masted schooner that sank in 1875 and was recently found intact in Lake Huron.

Cost: $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

5. PLANETARIUM SHOW

Where/When: University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History, 1109 Geddes Ave. in Ann Arbor; Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Why go?: This presentation featuring the voice of actor Liam Neeson features striking, immersive animations of the formation of the early universe, star birth and death, the collision of giant galaxies and a simulated flight to a supermassive black hole.

Pricing: $5.
