Grab & Go Kids Planner: Music, Dining and Outdoor Exploration

Here is a look at some activities going on around the Dexter area this weekend.

This weekend marks the first weekend in August. Where has the summer gone? Here are our best bets for your family this weekend, in and around Dexter.

  • Thursday Night Live

Where/when: Dexter United Methodist Church, 6:15 p.m. Thursday. Meet outside at the picnic area near the playground.

Why go? This is a fun way to catch up with folks you haven’t seen in a while, get to know new people and check out Dexter United Methodist Church. There will be a potluck dinner at 6:15 p.m. and a half-hour fireside service at 7 p.m. Please bring a dish to pass.

  • Michigan Roots Jamboree

Where/when: Depot Town, 100 Cross St. in Ypsilanti, 4 p.m.-midnight Friday and 10 a.m.-midnight Saturday.

Why go? The Michigan Roots Jamboree is a two-day outdoor music and art festival showcasing the finest talent the Midwest has to offer.

  • Chicken Roast

Where/when: North Lake United Methodist Church, 3 p.m. Saturday.

Why go? Enjoy an evening with your neighbors. The menu includes chicken, corn on the cob, beans, coleslaw and rolls. Patrons may dine in or order for takeout.

Pricing: $9.50 per person.

  • Beasts on the Beach

Where/when: Kensington Metropark at Martingale Beach, 2-4 p.m. Sunday.

Why go: Snakes and turtles are commonly misunderstood. Join an interpreter and go for a tour to sort out what is true and what isn’t about these amazing creatures. Call 248-685-0603 for more information.

  • Third annual 'Buy Michigan Now' Festival

Where/when: Downtown Northville on Main and Center streets, Friday through Sunday.

Why go? This is a family-friendly event featuring various Michigan entertainers, businesses, products and educational opportunities. The goal of this festival is to help raise awareness about local businesses and to help revitalize the local economy. Visit the event’s website for more information and a schedule of events.
