Humane Society of Huron Valley Plans Third Annual Golf Outing

Proceeds from the Purrfect Doggone Golf Scramble will benefit the shelter's rescue program.

Animal lovers unite! The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is seeking golfers for its third annual Purrfect Doggone Golf Scramble fundraiser Sept. 16.

The event, which will take place at Pierce Lake Golf Course in Chelsea, includes 18 holes of golf, raffles, team prizes, lunch and contests throughout the afternoon.

Registration for the event, which can be completed online through Sept. 12, costs $100 per person.

"It's a pretty fun event because we usually have a combination of serious competitors and those who are just playing for fun," said Lynn Mazurek, development associate for HSHV.

Last year the event drew 100 area golfers from Washtenaw County and surrounding communities.

"This is our second-largest fundraiser of the year," Mazurek said. "All the money goes into our general fund, which pays for programs and feeding and caging our animals."

Mazurek said the shelter assists up to 10,000 animals a year.

"The number of animals is down from last year, but that's OK with us," she said. "Hopefully that means more people are becoming more educated on spaying or neutering their pets and microchipping animals so they don't become strays."

In addition to the golf tournament, Mazurek said, there will be prizes for Best All Men's Team, Best All Women's Team, Best Co-ed Team, Longest Drive (male and female) and Closest to the Pin.

The event begins with a continental breakfast and registration at 9 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 10 a.m. While golfers are waiting to tee off, they can purchase raffle tickets for myraid gift packages donated by area golf courses and local businesses.

"We have a lot of neat raffle items that were all donated by the communities in our service area," Mazurek said.

Raffle prizes include an overnight stay at Webber's Inn in Ann Arbor and two rounds of golf at a resort on Mackinac Island.

For those who aren't up to the golfing challenge but still want to donate, hole sponsorships ($125), contest sponsors ($250), beverage cart sponsors ($500) and course sponsors ($1,000) are still needed.

To register as a sponsor, call 734-661-3573 or email lynn@hshv.org. To register for the golf tournament, visit the HSHV website.
