Local Service Groups Plan Thanksgiving Dinner for Dexter Seniors

The free meal is open to all seniors in the Dexter community.

Service groups throughout the community will come together to provide a hot Thanksgiving meal to Dexter seniors on Nov. 25 during the 10th annual "Seniors Get Stuffed" event.

This year “Seniors Get Stuffed” will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Nov. 25 at the . Doors will open at 11 a.m. Individuals who are 55 and older or disabled are invited to attend this event.

will be providing the turkeys and all the trimmings. Steve and Sandy Varney and volunteers from will prepare the food. The Dexter Lions Club, Kiwanis Club of Dexter, Boy Scout Troop 477, the Dexter High School Key Club and Leo’s Club, as well as other volunteers will also help with the event.

''Seniors Get Stuffed' is intended for Dexter’s seniors to gather with friends and rekindle friendships while enjoying a delicious meal," resident Elaine Owsley said.

There are no regularly scheduled programs at the center on Nov. 25 and the WAVE bus will not be operating. Homebound meals are available by calling 734-426-5397. Reservations are not required.

Upcoming events at the Dexter Senior Center:

  • Monthly Birthday Celebration

All members with a birthday in the month of November are invited to enjoy a free lunch at the center at noon Nov. 16. Make your reservation for lunch by calling 734-426-5397 by noon on Nov. 15. In order to get a free lunch for your birthday month you must be a member of the senior center. Each month seniors are entertained by a mystery birthday singer and Busch’s donates a decorated sheet cake. Seniors can ride the WAVE bus free on the day of their birthday by calling 734-475-9494.

  • Pizza lunch

Join us for lunch on Nov. 22. In addition to a salad, seniors will be treated to compliments of Dexter Garage Door. Reservations are required.

  • Needle felting class 

Suzanne VanNatter will hold a needle felting class at 1 p.m. Nov. 21. Students will learn how to make a turkey to decorate their Thanksgiving table or use as a hostess gift. The cost is $5 and registration is required by calling 734-426-7737.

  • Medicare information

The dates for open enrollment for Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans) will be different this year. Open Enrollment will run through Nov. 30, with all plans taking effect Jan. 1, 2012. During open enrollment, a representative will be available at the Dexter Senior Center on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings by appointment to help with Medicare questions.
