National Weather Service Issues Winter Storm Watch for Washtenaw County

The first snowstorm of the season could take place tonight beginning at 7 p.m.

Old Man Winter is rearing his nasty head early this year, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a winter storm watch for tonight.

Washtenaw County could see between 2 to 4 inches of snow by Wednesday, according to Ann Arbor.com.

Earlier forecasts predicted between less than an inch of snow to 3 inches for Washtenaw County.

The NWS advisory said 6 inches is possible in some parts of southeast Michigan if a low pressure system from Ohio moves through the area this afternoon, making the changeover from rain to snow sooner rather than later. However, the service said most of the accumulation will be on grassy areas and elevated surfaces, such as bridges and overpasses.

The NWS said snow covered and icy roads are expected to develop tonight as temperatures drop below freezing. Roads are expected to be slippery and hazardous for Wednesday's morning commute.

The winter storm watch is in effect until Wednesday morning. A flood warning for Mill Creek in Dexter and a flood watch remains in effect for all of Washtenaw County this evening. The weather service said Mill Creek was at 8.7 inches and rising on Tuesday morning and was expected to rise above its 12-foot flood stage by late this afternoon.
