News Briefly: Property Taxes Due Feb. 28

Here are a few reminders of upcoming happenings in the village of Dexter.

Village Briefs

  • Village offices will be closed Monday due to Presidents Day. Trash pickup will not be delayed.
  • The village will hold a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Dexter District Library. The topics will include Phase II of the development of the along with an opportunity for general questions and answers.
  • Payments on delinquent 2010 village property taxes can be accepted at  village offices until Feb. 28. Payments must be received in the office by 5 p.m. on Feb. 28. Postmarks cannot be accepted. After this date they must be paid at the Washtenaw County Treasurer’s Office. Personal property taxes for commercial and industrial properties can still be accepted at the village offices past this date. Tax information can be found on the village’s Web site.

Historical Society Presentation

Frank Wilhelme, former teacher and co-founder and former president of the Dexter Area Historical Society, will present an illustrated talk titled "The Dexters of Massachusetts: Washtenaw County’s Connection to a Prominent American Family" at the at 2 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to highlighting the early generations that settled in New England, Wilhelme will focus on three generations of Dexters whose roots were primarily in Michigan and the Midwest: Judge Samuel W. Dexter, a Michigan pioneer and founder of the village of Dexter; his son, Wirt Dexter, a prominent businessman and noted attorney who led the rebuilding of Chicago following the Great Fire of 1871; and his daughter, Katharine Dexter McCormick, a leader in the struggle for women’s rights.
