News Briefly: Rotary Club Holds Benefit for Japan Victims; Children's Authors Host Writing Workshop

Rotary Club holds fundraiser for victims of Japan tsunami

The in conjunction with will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. March 31 to provide emergency shelter boxes for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Peter Theocharakis, owner of Dexter's Pub, has volunteered to donate 10 percent of gross sales for the day to the Dexter Rotary Club Foundation. In addition, the Rotary Club will have a small auction at Dexter's Pub to raise more funds for shelter boxes.

Auction items may be dropped off at the offices of in Dexter. For more information or to make donations, contact Larry Courson at larrycourson@peaceaa.net.

Each shelter box costs $1,000 and provides emergency housing and supplies to support up to 10 families.

Authors meet-and-greet

The Chelsea District Library will hold its second annual "Authors in Chelsea" event April 13 as part of National Library Week. "Authors in Chelsea" is sponsored by the Chelsea District Library and the Friends of Chelsea District Library, that brings in three nationally known authors and illustrators to lead a free workshop for the community.

Dexter children and their families are invited to the Chelsea District Library from 6:30-8 p.m. April 13 to meet the authors and get books signed.

This year’s lineup includes Gail Carson Levine, author of the Newbery Honor-winning book and motion picture Ella Enchanted; Michigan cartoonist and Chelsea District Library’s artist-in-residence, Jerzy Drozd; and Johanna Hurwitz, author of many books for young readers, including Class Clown and Teacher’s Pet.

" 'Authors in Chelsea' will help students see that writing is a viable option for a future: Real people write these wonderful books, and someday, they could, too," said Patrick Little, principal of Beach Middle School in Chelsea.
