Here is a preview of upcoming events and programs in the Dexter area.

Aubree's Pizzeria seeks community sports photos

, a new restaurant scheduled to open July 25 in Dexter, would like to hang pictures throughout the restaurant of local children playing sports. Requirements for the photos are as follows:

  • The photo must be an action shot of a child playing a sport of any kind for a local Dexter team.
  • The photo must be high-quality resolution.
  • A parent must sign a release form allowing Aubree's to display the picture in the restaurant. Names will not be included on the photo.

The deadline to submit photos is Aug. 5. Images may be sent to dexter.feedback@aubrees.com in .JPG, .PNG or .PDF format.

Chelsea Community Kitchen offers canning classes

Preserving and canning enthusiast Terry Peyton of Chelsea is using kitchens made available through the Chelsea Community Kitchen to offer a unique opportunity for area residents to learn home canning skills. Classes are scheduled for Thursday evenings:

  • 6:30-8 p.m. July 28 — Blue ribbon raspberry jelly
  • 8-9:30 p.m. July 28 — Putting the pickle in the jar 
  • 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 18 — Corn 
  • 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 15 — Tomatoes
  • 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 29 — Pepper

A fee of $20 per person for each class covers the cost of instruction, kitchen rental and supplies. Class size is limited to eight students.

“Home canning is one skill that any family, any income, any size can utilize to preserve the bounty of summer and enjoy it through the winter months in Michigan," Peyton said.

Peyton said she's enthusiastic about teaching canning skills, and she is committed to using local produce, too.

“When at all possible, I buy raspberries, tomatoes, corn, peas, beans, cucumbers, peppers and blueberries from the local farmers market vendors in Chelsea, Dexter and Ann Arbor," she said.

Peyton has made presentations locally at The Woman's Health Center, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, and has helped members of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Chelsea prepare entries for the Chelsea Community Fair.
