Patch Readers Pick Foggy Bottom Coffee House as 'Best Live Music Venue' in Dexter

The coffee shop features live acoustic music and open mic poetry readings throughout the year.

When Dexterites are in the mood for live music, there are some great options. But voters in have spoken, and one locale rose above the rest.

is the winner of the Readers' Choice Best Live Music poll. The cafe garnered 53 percent of the vote, beating out (33 percent), and the Dexter Performing Arts Center (13 percent).

Doug Marrin, owner of Foggy Bottom, said he was "pleasantly surprised" to hear about the contest.

"I'm thankful people are thinking about us," he said.

Marrin said the cafe has scaled back on live music for the summer, and will offer acoustic music twice a month on Saturday mornings.

"We try to stay with the light, acoustic jazz and folk music so we're not overpowering customers' conversations," Marrin said.

During the school year, the coffee shop also hosts student bands for the annual "Battle of the Bands" competition, as well as periodic poetry readings.

"I always enjoy bringing in some of Dexter's younger talent to perform," he said. "It's a great venue for musicians who are new to performing for an audience."
